FAQ Frequently asked questions

What is Taekwondo?

It’s a Korean martial art similar to karate!
It features lots of kicking, striking, and sparring with a partner.

Taekwondo translates to “foot fist way”
It was developed in the 1940s-50s by general Choi Hong Hi as a combination of traditional Korean martial arts and Japanese Karate.

All across the world, people of all ages have been training in Taekwondo to learn self defense, get in shape, and build their self discipline. It’s great exercise and a lot of fun!

How long does it take to reach black belt?

It takes around 2.5 – 3 years of training to reach 1st Degree Black Belt.

Students will typically spend at least 2 months at each belt leading up to their first black belt. At that point, some mistakenly think they’ve reached the end of Taekwondo, but achieving your 1st Degree black belt is just the beginning!

There’s at least another 15 years of training to truly develop your skills to a level of mastery and earn the rank Master / 6th Degree black belt. But even then, you haven’t reached the last belt.

To achieve the highest rank, 9th Degree black belt, you would have to train for almost 40 years!

At what age can kids start training?

The youngest age our program starts at is 4 years old.

Our Little Dragons program is specifically designed for preschoolers and kindergarteners ages 4-5. We’ve found that the age of 4 or 5 is the youngest age that children can meaningfully benefit from Taekwondo. This is the perfect age for them to start developing their skills such as balance, focus, coordination, and discipline, and listening skills – especially as they get ready to start kindergarten or first grade.

Can my child with special needs do Taekwondo?

Yes, children and adults with special needs can train in taekwondo.
We have taught students with autism, ADHD, and other diagnoses. We treat and evaluate each student on a case by case basis.

We don’t accept or decline any students based on any diagnosis. We always have potential students try a class before starting a membership so we can see how they interact with the instruction and other students. Our goal is to ensure that all students can participate safely in class and without disruption.

If your child has special needs and you’d like to speak to our chief instructor to see if Taekwondo would be a good fit for you, schedule your free trial class today!

Am I too old, out of shape, or inexperienced to start?

Not at all! You can learn and improve your skills in Taekwodno at any age, fitness level, or experience level!

If you think you can’t start martial arts because you’re too old, or too out of shape, you’re in for a pleasant surprise! It doesn’t matter what kind of skills or experience you currently have, you’ll take things step by step, at your own pace. And you’ll have instructors with you every step of the way, trained to make sure you grow and succeed.

We’ve seen adults excel at Taekwondo after starting their first class over the age of 50, and some over 60!

And we’ve seen students succeed and meet their fitness goals, whether it’s losing weight, improving cardio, or building strength!

YOU can be a martial artist! But you have to take that first step and actually take that first class.

Are kid and adult classes separate?

Yes!

We understand that what you, an adult, want and need from a Taekwondo class is much different than that of a 10 year old, and different for a 10 year old than that of a 5 year old.

That’s why we’ve tailored each class to best fit your needs, with separate classes for kids and adults.

You can train in peace, working with the instructor to meet your personal training goals. Meanwhile, your kids can work on their own skills, at their own pace, in a class just for them.

For families that do want to train together, we have an option for them too!

While our weekday classes are separated for kids and adults – we have a family class on Saturday morning where our school age kids and adults can train together. Perfect for families with different aged students!

How many times per week can I take class?

All of our memberships are unlimited attendance!

You can come in as often as your class is offered. Our kids, teens, and adult classes are all offered 6 days per week, Monday-Saturday. For our pre-k students, we offer class 3 days per week, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

There’s no extra charge for coming more days!

You can train as often as you like, on a schedule and timeframe that best works for you.
